Tom Gilbey has shown that supermarkets are full of genuinely good wine at affordable prices. But he reviews what's on British shelves, and only a small share of those bottles are sold in Ireland.
Aisle Pour gathers everything worth knowing about the wines you can buy here into one place: Vivino scores, critic averages, picks from John Wilson and Leslie Williams, competition medals and Tom's ratings. Alongside them are the current prices and deals at Aldi, Lidl, Dunnes, SuperValu, Tesco and M&S, checked every week.

How a wine gets in. It must be on sale in an Irish supermarket now. It also needs at least one of these: a Vivino average of 4.0 or more from 150+ ratings, or 3.9 or more from 400+; a recommendation from John Wilson (Irish Times) or Leslie Williams (Irish Examiner) since Nov 2025; or a Class or Class with Bells On rating from Tom Gilbey. "Best overall" blends the Vivino score (adjusted for how many people rated it) with the Wine-Searcher critic average where we have one, then adds a bonus for Irish press picks, Tom Gilbey ratings and competition medals (IWSC, Decanter World Wine Awards, International Wine Challenge, 2022 onwards). Decanter and IWC results were checked against the competitions’ own results databases; a medal is only shown when the same cuvée matches, and the vintage it was won with is listed in Details, so check it against the bottle on the shelf.
In press means a shop and price taken from a recent Irish review. Lidl and M&S don't list their Irish wine online, so check the shelf. Clubcard prices need a Tesco Clubcard, and Real Rewards prices a SuperValu Real Rewards card. Deal end dates are as the shop lists them. Bottle photos come from the shops' websites.
Vivino scores are the average across all vintages, so the vintage on the shelf may score a little differently from the one Vivino shows first. Own-label wines often have too few ratings to show one.
Aisle Pour is independent and not affiliated with Tom Gilbey, Vivino, Wine-Searcher, the Irish Times, the Irish Examiner, the wine competitions or any of the shops. Their names and the shops' bottle photos are used only to identify the wines.
